What are Essential Oils?

Essential oils, known as nature’s living energy, are the natural, aromatic volatile liquids found in shrubs, flowers, trees, roots, bushes, and seeds. The distinctive components in essential oils defend plants against insects, environmental conditions, and disease. They are also vital for a plant to grow, live, evolve, and adapt to its surroundings.

Essential oils are extracted from aromatic plant sources via steam distillation, and are highly concentrated and far more potent than dry herbs. For instance, 1 drop of peppermint essential oil is equal to 26 cups of peppermint tea!  While essential oils often have a pleasant aroma, their chemical makeup is complex and their benefits vast—which makes them much more than something that simply smells good.

How to use Essential Oils

AROMATICALLY

Essential oils are best known for their aromas, which can help create an environment to suit your specific needs. In addition to adding them to cleaning products and beauty staples, you can infuse the air directly with your favorite fragrance by using one of our many diffusers. How Essential Oils Work

Anytime you apply, rub or massage essential oils into your skin, your expreince starts with sensory receptors. These receptor cells are all over your body, and they do some pretty powerful stuff. Let's talk about what these human body receptors are and why they're so amazing!

WHAT IS A RECEPTOR,

AND HOW DOES IT WORK?

Receptors are protein molecules that have binding sites on them for different types of molecules. When an external molecule finds a binding site it fits in, it communicates with your brain through electrical signals. These signals can go to your muscles, organs, or—in the case of your olfactory receptors—the amygdala, which is involved in the emotions you experience.

Some familiar receptors are your taste buds. When you eat, the food or drink interacts with saliva, and molecules bind to the taste receptors in your mouth. These receptors come in contact with nerve cells, which communicate a particular flavor to your brain.

Another example of receptors in action is Cool Azul™ Pain Relief Cream. When you apply it to your skin, it triggers receptors and sends cooling signals to the brain. That’s why you can feel the tingling sensation all over your skin!

Essential Oil Saftey

Essential oils are safe if you respect these potent prdducts fand hte plants they come from. They’re powerful tools, and like any tool, be sure to follow label instructions and start slow with any new oil.

Some essential oils may cause photosensitivity if you catch some rays after applying the oils to your skin. Make sure to avoid direct sun exposure for up to 72 hours after using these oils.

Additionally, a few oils are known as “hot” oils, which means they can leave a warming or cooling sensation when applied to your skin that may feel intense. Peppermint is one example of a hot oil; Cinnamon BarkBlack Pepper,  and Oregano are others. When using these oils, dilute them with a carrier oil before applying to your skin and watch for a reaction. If no reaction occurs, you’re good to go! Bottom line—start with small doses of an essential oil and build from there.
